Winter Park page →Air conditioning in Central Florida rarely gets a break. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for Orlando International Airport show about 3,452 cooling degree days a year against roughly 525 heating degree days, and an average of about 110 days a year reach 90°F or higher. Even January logs some cooling demand. Summer dew points average above 70°F from June through September, and the rainy season runs from late May to mid-October.
That humidity matters. EPA notes that "the presence of condensation or high relative humidity is an important indicator of the potential for mold growth" in ducts, and its mold guide advises keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent and keeping "air conditioning drip pans clean and the drain lines unobstructed and flowing properly." Ductwork here often runs through hot attics, and studies by UCF's Florida Solar Energy Center found significant duct leaks in a majority of new central Florida homes it tested.
Storms add to it. Hurricanes Irma (2017), Ian (2022) and Milton (2024) all brought 10 inches or more of rain to parts of the metro, with flooding and long power outages. After a flood, the Florida Department of Health warns that "if the system was flooded, turning it on without proper cleaning will spread mold throughout your home."
